Finger makes the nice observation that "Pirates, generally speaking, did for themselves and on their own personal accounts and sometimes were hanged for doing those things for which they would have been praised and knighted had they done them in the name of patriotism." Discussing Francis Drake, he notes, "But Drake was also a pirate of the first water, burning, slaying, laying to waste as cheerfully as did Avery, or Lowther, or Blackbeard Teach." Among many exciting stories that of Mary Read, woman pirate, is certainly wilder than any fiction-writer's plot. Finger writes here with his usual open-minded perspective on history. First published as an artlicle in The American Parade in 1928. This is considered to be Schuyler's first publication in book form. (His first novel, Black No More, was published in 1930.) Little Blue Books attempted to provide a "University in Print" for the working class. Original editions sold for five cents; later the price increased to 10 and 15 cents each. Many notable authors began their careers in the Haldeman-Julius stable. Many other noteworthy works by the more famous appeared in these booklets for the first time. The subjects covered everything from literature and fine art to basic language and math skills, home improvement, mental improvement, history, and social issues such as abortion, racial issues, religious issues, the KKK, evolution, etc. A truly significant peek at cultural standards in the first half of the 20th century.
