The unit took over 5000 b/w still shots, b/w film, and color film that was lost in transit to Washington. Soule's contribution is not acknowedged here, nor are the pictures well identified (the editors should be embarrassed), but there are remarkable photographs in this book, most of them sharply reproduced. As Lt Col Twining, the author served as operations officer for the First Marine Division on Guadalcanal, during the period 7 August 1942, when the Division landed, until after its 7 December withdrawal. Twining has some useful insights, but he pulls his punches when he alludes to officers who did not measure up. He ignores the work of other historians, while his impressionistic, personal manner, leaves much out that requires further consultation. One wonders why, if he does not think Richard B. Frank's excellent history is deficient, he wasn't forthcoming with information for that writer--or another. It's too bad that Twining didn't write this 30 years ago. Stock #28,800. New copy vg/vg.
