The book relates the story of Germany's "Dunkirk", a successful evacuation that allowed forty thousand troops to escape to Italy, where they later fought the Allies to a bloody stalemate. The Allies lost a significant opportunity in Sicily when a one-armed German gneral, Hans Valentin Hube, the commander of the XIV Panzer COrps, stepped in to mount a brilliant strategic defense. With only four divisions, he tied down two Allied armies, holding off the invadors for thirty-eight crucial days and then escaping with nearly his entire command. ROMMEL'S LAST BATTLE: THE DESERT FOX AND THE NORMANDY CAMPAIGN
Good in Good dust jacket Stein And Day, 1983 Hardcover, black cover with gilt lettering on front and spine. Jacket is good, but there is chipping, especially on edges and spine, and there is creasing along top and bottom edges. Botttom of front inside jacket flap is clipped. Probable book club edition. There is no printing history. Unfortunately, the previous owner found something on almost every page that was so interesting he needed to mark at least one paragraph in the margin in pencil, but only an occasional word is underlined. My husband says this book will appeal to those looking for well-documented information on Rommel's perspective of D-Day. There is an excellent bibliography and numerous footnotes. Other than the numerous pencil marks, this book is in good condition and is an excellent reading copy
