British Maps of the American Revolution: A Guide to an Exhibit in the William L. Clements Library

Publisher: William L. Clements Library, University of Michigan, 1936 Ann Arbor, MI.
Book. Book condition: Good. Soft cover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall Bulletin XXIV of the William L. Clements Library. "..The maps included in this exhibition were made by, or after the surveys of, British engineers. They were engraved and published in London, in some cases within two or three months of the time the actual battle took place - an amazingly short time for that period. That they were considered important in that day is evidenced by the fact that several appeared in more than one edition. In some instances the same plate was altered time after time in order to bring up to date the movements of the two armies.." 23 pages. Book is in GOOD condition. Paper wrappers; stapled binding.

The Romance of the Revolution, being True Stories of the Adventures, Romantic Incidents, Hairbreadth Escapes, and Heroic Exploits of the Days of '76
 Picture
Publisher: Porter & Coates, 1870 Philadelphia, PA.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "The leading events of the War of Independence are familiar to every American; but there has been much recorded of stirring incident which is not familiar to the American people, and much remains yet to be disclosed, connected with even the prominent actors in the drama. From time to time, during the last fifty years, various sketches have appeared, recounting strange passages in the war; and these sketches have been sometimes replete with extraordinary adventures and romantic situation of the the most novel and thrilling kind; but they have never, till now, been collected in any permanent form, and have been in danger, from merely appearing in the transitory periodicals of the day, of passing into utter oblivion. And, to preserve these legendary pictures from such obliviio0n, and the perpetuate them in the affections of the American people, was the object of this work; to collect these, and other fragments of history, as combined, would present a history of the romance of the Revolution, and a chronicle of the individual heroism, exploits, and adventures of those engaged in that struggle..." 444 pages.  Picture
Publisher: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1874 New York.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall American Pioneers and Patriots Series. "I commenced writing the Life of Paul Jones with the impression, received from early reading, that he was a reckless adventurer, incapable of fear, and whose chief merit consisted in performing deeds of desperate daring. But I rise from the careful examination of what he has written, said, and done, with the conviction that I had misjudged his character. I now regard him as one of the purest and most enlightened of patriots, and one of the noblest of men. His name should be enrolled upon the same scroll with those of his intimate friends, Washington, Jefferson, Franklin and Lafayette.." 359 pages. Book is in GOOD condition; aging. No dust jacket.

Adams, Randolph G.
Pilgrims, Indians and Patriots: The Pictorial History of America from the Colkonial Age to the Revolution
 Picture
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company, 1928 Boston, MA.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "In a previous volume, entitled The Gateway to American History, I tried to assemble a number of pictures illustrating the story of America from the Discovery to the founding of New York. In this volume the story is carried on from the landing of the Pilgrims to the end of the American Revolution. It has been necessary to confine the narrative principally to the development of those colonies which became the United States of America. Once more, it should be said, the reason for the book is the pictures. These have again been gathered from old books in the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. It should probably be repeated that these books are not, for the most part, to be found in ordinary libraries..We reach, in this volume, a period of history in which it is exceedingly difficult to know exactly what happened, for in recent years the learned men have found a great many new facts which give us a very different story from that our grandfathers thought they knew.." Very well illustrated. 206 pages. Book is in GOOD condition. No dust jacket.

Flight From the Republic: The Tories of the American Revolution
 Picture
Publisher: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, Inc., 1967 Indianapolis, IN.
Book. Book condition: Near Fine. Very Good. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall First printing (stated). No aspect of the American Revolution has been more neglected than the effect off the war on the Tories who remained loyal to the British Crown. In his new book..Professor North Callahan corrects this historical oversight. The exciting narrative of Flight from the Republic persuades us to shift our traditional sympathies to the Tories and to view them as the refugees they were. They numbered around 100, 000, including many of the Colonies' best educated and most accomplished citizens. Crowded into ships like cattle, forced to leave their belongings to the radical mobs from Boston to Savannah, these Tories often parted from their families and friends forever. Some sought a haven in Canada. Others made their way to England, where they were more tolerated than welcomed, or to the West Indies. Based on research in contemporary sources in England, Canada, the West Indies and the United States, Flight from the Republic is a unique contribution to colonial American literature. The author has presented the reader of history with a vivid and sympathetic account of a strange, forgotten chapter in the American story.." xiii + 208 pages with index. Book. Book condition: Very Good. Good. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "Combining in one volume an arresting introduction to and a professional analysis of the American Revolution this book is without parallel for its breadth of story, wealth of detail, and authority of authorship. The Compact History of the Revolutionary War is the devoted and mature work of two professional military officers who posses the historical acumen and the tactical experience both to summarize the Revolution from an overall perspective and to analyze the specific operations of its individual battles. Those looking for significance as well as the drama of this momentous conflict will find this volume the ideal guide. The authors to not hesitate to draw original - and sometimes surprising - conclusions. Most significant of these, perhaps, the that which greatly enhances the military stature of General George Washington and ascribes to him the primary credit for the Revolution's success. And many other officers - Greene, Schuyler, Steuben, Lafayette, Benedict Arnold, Howe, Clinton, Cornwallis, Burgoyne are treated sympathetically yet always objectively. In addition to probing the strategies of these generals, the authors consider them as men and human beings, enabling the reader to understand their motivations and to grasp their very thoughts and emotions.." 510 pages with index. He was a soldier, a judge, a delegate to the American Continental Congress, speaker of the Delaware Assembly, a chief executive of Delaware, a justice of the state's Supreme Court, and held many other offices of public trust..This, then, is an effort to present, in perhaps too brief form, a biography of Rodney who, despite his devastating facial cancer and severe asthma, managed to carry on an energetic career that was ended soon after the United States won its war for independence from England.." Nicely illustrated by A. N. Wyeth. 32 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Paper wrappers; stapled binding.

Gerson, Noel B.
Light-Horse Harry: A Biography of Washington's Great Cavalryman, General Henry Lee
 Picture
Publisher: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1966 Garden City, NY.
Book. Book condition: Very Good. Good. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall First edition (stated). "Harry Lee was fortunate to have been born a Lee of Virginia. In spite of what many people thought, Harry's first words were probably not 'Charge the bastards! Ride them down, boys!' Yet they might have been. The son of a wealthy planter, he learned to ride and perhaps even to swear at three or four. By the time he was in college his acquaintances included men like James Madison and Aaron Burr. By 1776 he was Captain of a troop of the Virginia Cavalry. And at Valley Forge, he, more than any other man, kept the ragged Revolutionary Army from starving to death. This is the remarkable man whose life has been captured in Light-Horse Harry. It was a life which had triumphs enough for half a dozen men. Governor of Virginia after the Revolution, he was appointed Major General of the Army by George Washington, and soon became the President's personal confidant. He was elected to the House of Representatives. At Washington's death, he spoke the funeral oration which contained the line: 'First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen.' But if his triumphs were great so were his tragedies: widowed early, he fell into the depths of bankruptcy after his retirement from politics. He spent an entire year in a debtor's prison. He was crippled in a senseless Baltimore riot, and journeyed to the West Indies to recover. He died upon returning to the country he helped to create. Light-Horse Harry is a fascinating history of a soldier, patriot, leader, and father of an immortal son, Robert E. Lee." 257 pages with index. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Dust jacket has small tears to top of rear panel; thus GOOD condition.

Griffith, Samuel B. II, 1906-1983.
In Defense of the Public Liberty. Britain, America, and the Struggle for Independence-- from 1760 to the Surrender at Yorktown in 1781.

Publisher: Garden City, NY, Doubleday, 1976. 'First Edition'.
725 p., index, plates, maps. Griffith, Marine General and hero of Guadalcanal, displays a fine historical touch in writing of the Revolution. "The purpose of this book is to attempt to place the American struggle for independence in the context of the period in which it took place. To do this in an appropriately objective and comprehensive manner requires first that one accord to developments of policy and strategy in Great Britain and France more attention than these generally receive, and second that one allow the actors to speak, to the greatest degree possible consistent with relevance, to the subject of the historic drama in which they took part."
