Keegan, John, 1934-
Intelligence in war : knowledge of the enemy from Napoleon to al-Qaeda / John Keegan.

Publisher: New York : Knopf, 2003..
xx, 387 p., [16] p. of plates : illus., maps ; index, 25 cm. Intelligence gathering is an immensely complicated and vulnerable endeavor. And it often fails. Until the invention of the telegraph and radio, information often traveled no faster than a horse could ride, yet intelligence helped defeat Napoleon. In the twentieth century, photo analysts didn’t recognize Germany’s V-2 rockets for what they were; on the other hand, intelligence helped lead to victory over the Japanese at Midway. In Intelligence in War, John Keegan illustrates that only when paired with force has military intelligence been an effective tool, as it may one day be in besting al-Qaeda. Bibliography (p. 363-368).

Knightley, Phillip.
The Second Oldest Profession. Spies and Spying in the Twentieth Century.

Publisher: N.Y., Norton, 1986.
xi, 436 p., illus. ”In 1909 the business of spying was hoisted to the highest reaches of British government with the formation of Britain's SIS. Acting in response to a totally fraudulent fear-- the German spy scare that preceded World War I-- the British soon had a lot of company as Germany, Russia, France and other powers large and small joined the mad rush toward information and espionage.” Knightley is concerned with the ”imbecilities committed in the hallowed name of intelligence” and thinks very little of it worthwhile. He selects his extensive documents carefully to support his point. The co-author of a book on Philby, he has low regard for the SIS, Menzies, Dansey, or Sinclair; he thinks Ultra's contribution overblown and Peter Wright and the Young Turks misled. Stock#23117.
