A leading catalyst behind the rise of American electronic music, composer Vladimir Ussachevsky was born in 1911 in Hailar, Manchuria; he emigrated to the U.S. in 1930, graduated from Pomona College & studied at the Eastman School of Music. There he composed his first major works, among them 1935's Theme and Variations and 1938's Jubilee Cantata, as well as various other pieces for piano, vocal, choral and orchestral performance. Upon earning his Ph.D. in 1939, Ussachevsky joined the faculty at Columbia University in 1947; around this time he began making his first forays into electronic music, culminating a few years later with his acquisition of an Ampex tape recorder. In 1952, he and colleague Otto Luening presented the first tape music performance ever given in the U.S., where among the pieces premiered was Ussachevsky's musique concrŠte landmark Sonic Contours; key works including 1954's Poem of Cycles and Bells and 1956's Piece for Tape Recorder followed, and in 1958 Ussachevsky and Luening received a Rockefeller Foundation grant to open the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, the first such electro-acoustic facility in America. Complete with four analog tape studios for electronic composition as well as the room-sized RCA Mark II Synthesizer, the CPEMC was the launching pad for countless experimental works, not the least of which were those written by Ussachevsky himself. He died January 4, 1990. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Anderson, Warren D.
Ethos and Education In Greek Music: The Evidence of Poetry and Philosophy
Publisher: Cambridge, Mass., Harvard UP [1968]. 306 p., indexes; 21.5 cm. 'Bringing together a wealth of material and working wherever possible from primary sources, Mr. Anderson offers here the most comprehensive study in English of the elusive and fascinating Greek concept of ethos. He seeks to determone how and why Greek writers supposed that music could express and even generate moral qualities of good and evil. It was about the time of Plato that this real or imaginary power of music began to be termed ethos, and also that its close historical connection with modality began to be analyzed objectively.' Locke, Ralph P.
Music, Musicians, and the Saint-Simonians.
Publisher: Chicago UP [1986]. xvi, 399 p., index, music, plates. "The Saint-Simonians, whose movement flourished in France between 1825 and 1835, are widely recognized for their contributions to history and social thought, but until now no full account has been made of the central role of the arts in their program. In this skillful interdisciplinary study, Ralph P. Locke describes and documents the Saint-Simonians' view of music as an ideological tool and the influence of this view on musical figures of the day. ...Among the musicians Locke discusses are Berlioz, Liszt, and Mendelssohn... Other musicians became the Saint-Simonians' faithful followers, among them Jules Vinçard, Dominique Tajan-Rogé, and particularly Félicien David, the movement's principal composer. Locke... includes detailed discussions of their music... Many of these pieces, rediscovered or reconstructed by Locke from authentic sources, are printed here." Paper; new from publisher. Marsh, J. B. T.
The Story of the Jubilee Singers
Publisher: The Cleveland Printing & Publishing Co., 1892 Cleveland, OH. Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall With supplement containing an account of their six years' tour around the world and many new songs by F. J. Loudin. "The story of the Jubilee Singers seems almost as little like a chapter from real life as the legend of the daring Argonauts who sailed with Jason on that famous voyage after the Golden Fleece. It is the story of a little company of emancipated slaves who set out to secure, by their singing, the fabulous sum of $20, 000 for the impoverished and unknown school in which they were students. The world was as unfamiliar to these untravelled freed people as were the countries through which the Argonauts had to pass; the social prejudices that confronted them were as terrible to meet as fire-breathing bulls or the warriors that sprang from the land sown with dragons' teeth; and no seas were ever more tempestuous than the stormy experiences that for a time tested their faith and courage. They were at times without the money to buy needed clothing. Yet in less than three years they returned, bringing back with them nearly one hundred thousand dollars. They had been turned away from hotels, and driven out of railway waiting rooms, because of their color. But they had been received with honor by the President of the United States, they had sung their slave songs before the Queen of Great Britain, and they had gathered as invited guests about the breakfast table of her Prime Minister. Their success was a remarkable as their mission was unique.." The Jubilee Singers were formed as a singing group by Fisk University, a school for ex-slaves, in 1871. One hundred thirty nine songs, including both words and music, are included in this book. 311 pages. Book is in GOOD condition; expected wear for a book of this age and genre, but with no major flaws. No dust jacket.
