Adams, Charles Francis. Friedlaender, Marc & Lyman H. Butterfield, editors.
Diary of Charles Francis Adams. Volume 5. January 1833-October 1834.

Publisher: Belknap Press of Harvard U.P., Cambridge, Mass., 1974.
xlii, 413 p., plates, 25 cm. "This diary, kept from January 1833 to June 1836 and hitherto unpublished, has elements of hidden personal drama. Through private meetings and caucuses and newspaper articles signed with pseudonyms, the younger Adams found effective means to carry on political activities in the face of dilemmas posed by his father's public prominence, his father-in-law's contrary persuasions, and his own preferences. He emerged with growing self-respect and solid accomplishment as political journalist-- his initial vocation. The diary has fresh disclosures also about the personality of John Quincy Adams, shrewdly assessed by an observer uniquely placed to interpret domestic scenes as well as the greatly waged struggles in Washington against the Southern "slaveocracy" and "gag rules". Colorful figures in Boston's political and social life are finely etched in outspoken appraisals..." Green cloth, spine stamped in gold; tan dj spine ends & front corner chipped; VG. 36984.

Dudley Carleton to John Chamberlain, 1603-1624. Jacobean Letters.

Publisher: Rutgers UP [1972].
Edited with an introduction by Maurice Lee, Jr. 335 p., index, portrait front. 'Sir Dudley Carleton was a professional diplomat who served as ambassador to Venice from 1610 to 1615 and then, off and on for the next twelve years, as ambassador to The Hague.... Both before and during his service abroad, he wrote regularly, sometimes almost every week, to his friend John Chamberlain, whose own letters (published in 1939), most of them addressed to Carleton, are considered models of their kind. ...Theirs was a lively, gossipy exchange that reflects various aspects of the Jacobean world and reveals the temper of a period of rapid, momentous, and not always intelligible change, both in England and in Europe.' Disraeli: A Picture of the Victorian Age. Translated from the French by Hamish Miles. With a New Introduction by Henri Peyre.

Publisher: Time-Life Books [1980].
xxii, 369 p., index. "Of Maurois' five or six major biographies, none shows his ideas at work more graphically than 'Disraeli'. Using techniques borrowed from the novelist, he presents Disraeli's life [Benjamin Disraeli, earl of Beaconsfield (1804-1881), British prime minister] as a developing drama— almost as a plotted story. Lightly he sketches in social and political background as the information becomes relevant to Disraeli's private problems or public career. He does not hesitate to heighten dramatic effects or to play discreetly on sentiment. In glittering analyses of Disraeli's actions and reactions, Maurois creates in the reader the illusion that he is seeing the world through Disraeli's eyes." Stock#23647.

Alexander Hamilton. A Concise Biography.

Publisher: NY, Oxford UP, 1976.
395 p., index, portrait front.; 21 cm. Alexander Hamilton's proposals "describe today's economic and political developments. He... urged a combination of farming, finance, industry, and commerce. ...he created facilities that encouraged prosperity. Of chief influence was restoration of public credit, which imbued the country with confidence and furnished the means of private enterprise. His national bank was an active supplement, providing a dependable paper currency. ...Hamilton was a zealous champion of individual rights. ...In the maturing of his plans for material advance, he would be the first to protect personal freedom from bureaucratic presumption. The friend of effective national instruments, he would guard against their demonstrated tendency to use authority for usurpation. Alexander Hamilton's passionate commitment to America is vivid in our country today, and the story of his career is worth retelling." Tan cloth; spine slightly faded, ink owner name; no dj; VG. Nicolson, Harold George, Sir, 1886-1968. Nicolson, Nigel, editor.
Diaries and Letters, 1930-1939. Edited by Nigel Nicolson.

Publisher: Atheneum, NY, 1966.
448 p., index, plates. English biographer, historian, diplomat, member of Parliament. "Apart from their prime historical importance for those who would understand the atmosphere of London in those depression-prewar years, both diaries and letters offer interesting sidelights on Nicolson's own political evolution from appeaser to sturdy opponent of the Third Reich. ...On the personal side he illumines a most unusual marriage. Nicolson's wife, Victoria Sackville-West, was a renowned poet, novelist and biographer. ...each complemented the other in a stimulating fashion, so that static and dynamic qualities blended into a harmonious whole. A symbol of this deep and abiding union was their beautiful garden at Sissinghurst, Kent, a jointly designed venture." Small tear in dj fold; VG. Stock#23532.
