Emmens, Robert G.
Guests of the Kremlin.

Publisher: New York: Macmillan, 1949..
First Edition Octavo, 8.25 (21 cm) tall, in red cloth with a black stripe. 291 pages. A World War II story with Cold War undertones. The author was one of five participants in the Doolittle raid on Tokyo in early 1942. The five landed in Siberia and were locked up in Soviet custody for about a year until their escape into Iran. The book is largely an indictment of the Soviet system. The book is clean, bright and sound, but there is a bump with mild wear to the lower front tip and the foot of the spine shows a touch of wear as well. The dustjacket is lightly worn in the same places and the front flap corners are clipped although there is a price stamped on the bottom edge, apparently common with this publication. Publisher: New York, Harper & Row [1967].
xiv, 434 p. 22 cm. "In 1952, Louis J. Halle, at the time Director of the State Department's Policy Planning Staff, wrote that "the present, in which our country finds herself, like Athens after the Peloponnesian wars, called upon to assume the leadership of the free world brings him [Thucydides] virtually to our side... The New World, 1939/1946: Volume I. A History of The United States Atomic Energy Commission
 Picture
Publisher: The Pennsylvania State University Press, 1962 University Park, PA.
Book. Book condition: Very Good. Good. Hardcover Signed by BOTH authors 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall INSCRIBED on front endpaper: "For Robert Davids / with all good wishes from / two fellow historians and associates / in the atomic energy program. / Richard G. Hewlett / Oscar E. Anderson, Jr." "The discovery of atomic energy ranks with the discovery of America in importance. It is a big, fundamental discovery that is sharply changing the direction of history. This book is the first to tell the whole story. Its authors are the only ones who have had unrestricted access to all the records, including classified material. Their pages convey the high excitement of the scientists who discovered, step by step, the nature of atomic fission; of their efforts to convince the government of its possibilities; of the agonizing race to produce a bomb before Nazi Germany produced one; of the delays, the frustrations, the misgivings, the false starts, the breakdowns, the calculations, the checking and rechecking, the all-night conferences, the letters, the phone calls, the trips, and the work, the work, the work - and the gradual emergence of sure knowledge, clear policies, workable procedure, and triumphant achievement. This book takes us into the laboratories, the conference rooms, the factories, and the proving grounds. We seen the gradual evolution of the ida, from the first glimmerings in laboratories scattered over half the western world to the devastatingly practical application. We see the bomb being built. We watch the tests. We sit in on the discussions in the White House, the Pentagon, and the United Nations. We gain a new understanding of the problems of control, and of the ways in which the tremendous power of the atom is making a new world." Illustrated with black and white photographic plates. xv + 766 pages with index. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Dust jacket is in GOOD condition; edgewear.
