Women and Children Last: The Loss of the Steamship Arctic
Publisher: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1961 New York.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall "..Today.. except for a few maritime antiquarians or those to whom this event might hold some especial personal significance, the Collins liner Arctic has all but been forgotten..When the final word of her loss reached her home port of New York (in 1854) a fortnight after the collision which sent her to the bottom, the effect was utterly catastrophic. Business came to a standstill and the city went into total mourning. Flags flew at half staff and offices were bedecked with crepe. All courts and legislative bodies were adjourned as a mark of public respect to the many bereaved members of the community. Ministers made the Arctic subject of impassioned sermons. Like the Titanic, the Arctic, although only a third as long and capable of taking but one-tenth as many passengers, was the queen of the transatlantic fleets of her day. Virtually brand-new, this ultramodern wooden side-wheel American steamer was inferior to none afloat. she had already made the record for the fastest west-east crossing of the Atlantic and she commanded the elite of transoceanic travelers. The Arctic sailed at the peak of renown of the United States Merchant Marine. Her tragic loss, coupled with the disappearance at sea of her sister ship, the Pacific, two years later, unfortunately brought to an end the shaky existence of the Collins Line. This hastened the regrettable decline from which our fleets, receiving insurmountable persecution by Confederate raiders during the American Civil War, did not recover for almost a full century...This is the story of that turning point more than a century ago - nautically speaking, a bitter descent from Olympus." 255 pages with index. Book is in GOOD condition. No dust jacket.

The Titanic Tregedy: God Speaking to the Nations
Publisher: The Pentecostal Union (Pillar of Fire), 1913 Bound Brook, NJ.
Book. Book condition: Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall "..Men have ceased to develop muscle, which is absolutely necessary to character building. Their attention has been turned to other things. Scientific investigation and civil and mechanical engineering have become all-absorbing passions, and men fail to acknowledge God as the source of their achievements. There are those who have inherited fortunes who know not the worth of a dollar and have no true conception of life. They imagine the world was created for their special benefit and have but little concern for the welfare of others. Fortune has favored them and they live and act as though there was not a great tribunal before which they must some day be arraigned. There were many such persons found on the Titanic when she went to her doom on the morning of April 15th, carrying with her into the depths of the sea 1, 635 souls. On the floating palace men defied God and His laws, and many refused to even try to make their escape after it was known that the vessel was doomed. Money, the god of this world, dominated their lives, and made them presumptuous enough to believe that the vessel could not go down. An object lesson was given to the world like the handwriting on the wall, foretelling the doom of nations. The Scriptures verify these things and men have o0nly to read and understand, but alas, so few do. While the sinking of the great vessel seemed to be the most cruel of all disasters to those who so keenly felt their loss, yet back of the calamity we see the hand of a merciful God.." 211 pages + 12 pages of advertisements for the Pentecostal Union, founded by Alma White. Book is in GOOD condition. No dust jacket.
