THE STRUCTURE OF TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD RATES

Publisher: University of California Press Berkeley & Los Angeles 1947.
Red cloth hardcover with stamped gold titles, in a buff dust jacket printed in red and black. 165 pages with index, illustrated with numerous tables and maps and fold-out map of rate territories. This book compared freight rates in various parts of the country, with a specific interest in shipping costs of agricultural products from California to the East Coast, and the importation of manufactured goods to the West Coast - revealing disparities in rate costs. "A mile is a mile wherever one finds it, yet freight rates do not reflect the fact, " states the jacket blurb. An interesting angle on West Coast economic development. The book is in very good condition with very light edgewear and a green crayon check mark on the rear paste-down. The jacket is pretty miserable, with numerous tears (many closed and supported from behind with archival book tape) and some chips missing at spine head and a couple of corners, some soil and discoloration. Encased in a plastic book jacket protector, however, it appears reasonably presentable. Apparent First Edition Poor Hard Cover Very Good 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall First edition. "In a day when the study of both economics and history are so widely prevalent, it seems very curious that there has been practically no attempt to cover the field of general railroad history. There exist hundreds of book on various phases of the present railroad problem, and numerous volumes on particular roads and railroad men, but the effort to combine these into a general history is lacking. It is to fill part of this gap that the following pages have been written.." xv + 345 pages with index. Book is in GOOD or better condition. No dust jacket.
