Garland, Hamlin, 1860-1940.
A Son of the Middle Border.

Publisher: [New York] Grosset & Dunlap [1928, c1917].
v, 466 p. 22cm. A classic of American realism, A Son of the Middle Border (1917) is the true coming-of-age odyssey of a farm boy who—informed by the full brute force of a homesteaders’ life on the vast unbroken prairie—would become a preeminent American writer of the early twentieth century. Pulitzer Prize–winner Hamlin Garland’s captivating autobiography recounts his journey from a rural childhood to the study of literature and the sciences in Boston, his vital connections with such inspirations as William Dean Howell, and eventually his reclaimed sense of identity as a writer of the Midwest’s beautiful yet hard land. This definitive book placed Garland among such regionalist writers as Willa Cather, Sherwood Anderson, and Theodore Dreiser.Stock# 42,820. Good+/ no dj.

 Picture
Publisher: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas, NY, 1935.
Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. First American Edition. First Printing. Hard Cover First American Edition, First Printing [Higginson A43b]. Publisher's full navy cloth, gilt lettering on spine, gilt medallion on cover, two family trees (fold-out) bound in. The dust jacket's rear panel contains a list of 40 Smith and Hass titles, all priced, making it highly unlikely that this is a book club edition, which is, in any event, the same as the trade edition. The front flap begins with "In A.D. 41" and the rear panel begins with "At the height, " indicating this issue has priority over issue beginning with other text. Later versions have additional inserted text at the top of the front flap which cause the rear flap to begin with "Suddenly." "The troublesome reign of Tiberius Claudius Caesar, Emperor of the Romans (born B.C. 10, died A.D. 54), as described by himself; also his murder at the hands of the notorious Agrippina (mother of the Emperor Nero) and his subsequent deification, as described by others.". The volume is in almost perfect condition, showing only the slightest shelf-wear, unmarked, tight, square and clean. The dust jacket (unpriced and unclipped), now in Mylar, is chipped, with some loss at the head of the spine, and lightly soiled on the rear panel. NEAR FINE/VERY GOOD. Publisher: Time, NY [1965].
xx, 429 p. Novel told in the first person by the Roman Emperor Claudius (10 B.C.-AD 54). First published in 1934, this edition is notable for the five-page introduction by Graves which the editors of Time commissioned for it. In it, Graves tells, in his self-mocking way, how the novel came to be, and how royalties from it , and the abortive film efforts, supported him for some years. Stock#23202. Vg/ stiff paper covers.
