The Blathwayt Atlas. Volume II. Commentary

Publisher: Providence, Brown University Press, 1975.
xx, 235 p.; 26.5 cm. All forty-eight Blathwayt maps, which form what has been called the first atlas of the British Empire, are discussed in the Commentary. Assembled by English colonial administrators, for whom they were working tools, these maps show the area of English overseas colonial and commercial interest, especially in the Western Hemisphere, in the latter part of the seventeenth century. Of the forty-eight maps, thirteen are manuscripts... thirty-five are printed. A number are the earliest maps of certain English colonies. Maps of New Jersey, Long Island, Bermuda, are among the important ones discussed. Stock#22532.Vg / dj vg.
