Whorf, Benjamin Lee, 1897-1941
Language, Thought, and Reality. Selected Writings
Publisher: M.I.T. Press, Cambridge, Mass., 1966. Edited and with an introduction by John B. Carroll. Foreword by Stuart Chase. M.I.T. Press, Cambridge, Mass. ['Second Paperback Printing, January, 1966']. xi, 278 p.; paper; rear cover scuffed, else VG. 'The title of this volume… is the title of a book that Whorf hoped to write, and for which a brief outline is to be found among the papers left at his death. The book would have been dedicated to the memory of Edward Sapir and Antoine Fabre d'Olivet, and would have attempted to present the implications of linguistics for the clarification of our thinking about the external world of reality. The notes indicate that the book… would have included in its appendix language sketches of Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Kota, Aztec, Hopi, Shawnee, Russian, Taos, Chinese, and Japanese. …I believe its title is a fitting one for the present edition, which includes nearly all of Whorf's writings which are pertinent to what he called the principle of linguistic relativity, which states, at least as a hypothesis, that the structure of a human being's language influences the manner in which he understands reality and behaves with respect to it. This edition also includes what are believed to be the most interesting and useful writings of Whorf in Middle American linguistics and in general linguistics.' Stock# 25,247. Philology.

Ziff, Paul, 1920-2003
Semantic Analysis
Publisher: Ithaca, N.Y., Cornell University Press [1960]. xi, [3], 255 p. index, 24 cm. The book goes back to Ziff’s work in aesthetics. As far back as graduate school, he was thinking about the reasons why a work of art is either good or bad, and so he was interested in determining what the phrase ‘good painting’ means. From there, he went on to determine what the word ‘good’ means in English: viz., “answering to certain interests.” And then all the way to “an informal introduction to and sketch of a rigorous semantic theory” that would be adequate for “determining a method and a means of evaluating and choosing between competing analyses of words and utterances.” Bibliography: p. 248-249. From the library of Prof. Vincent Tomas of the Brown University Department of Philosophy. Stock# 43,981. Vg / no dj.
