[Washington Irving],
Miscellanies No. II Containing Abbotsford, and Newstead Abbey
 Picture
Publisher: John Murray London 1835.
First Edition Good in the publisher's original 1/4 green cloth and drab brown paper covered boards with a paper label on the spine. The cloth at the front joint is worn through and the front hinge is starting and although the paper label on the spine is complete it is rubbed and worn at the edges and creased between the signatures of the pages. There are 3/4" and 1" stains (spots) on the end sheets possibly from some sort of protective covering having been attached to the end pages to protect the boards. 290 pages followed by a one page publisher's ad for "A Tour On The Prairies, by the Author of 'The Sketch-Book, ' forming No. 1 of Miscellanies, by Washington Irving." (which was published in March, 1835.) The first British edition was published on May 1, 1835 preceding the first US edition by 30 days. (Langfeld/Blackburn, p. 34) This is state B according to Blanck with the ad noted above on page [291]. (BAL, 10141) The contents are "Irving's fond tribute to the homes of Walter Scott and Lord Byron." (Brian Jay Jones: Washington Irving An American Original.) Evidence exists in correspondence from the publisher that only 3, 000 copies of the first edition were printed. Our code number = TB22594

"Complete Works. Volume XXII. Kent Edition" (spine). "It must be admitted that by the mere force of circumstances 'Under Western Eyes' has become already a sort of historical novel dealing with the past. This reflection bears entirely upon the events of the tale; but being as a whole an attempt to render not so much the political state as the psychology of Russia itself, I venture to hope that it has not lost all its interest" (Author's Note). x, 382 p., 20.5 cm.; grey cloth boards, printed paper spine label; spine darkened, owner's ink stamp on flyleaf, clear plastic dj torn; good. 34377.
