Naval Leadership with Some Hints to Junior Officers and Others: A Compilation by and for the Navy
 Picture
Publisher: The United States Naval Institute, 1939 Annapolis, MD.
Book. Book condition: Good to Very Good. No Jacket. Hardcover 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall This book was originally used as a textbook on leadership by the U. S. Naval Academy, and continued as a textbook through World War II. It is interesting to note that this Fourth Edition was revised and published in 1939, just prior to the outbreak of World War II. "It is more difficult to deal with personnel than with materiel. Highly developed material, not properly operated, fails to work at designated efficiency; whereas personnel badly handled not only fails to work efficiently, but develops a spirit which reacts unfavorably on the entire organization. Since the founding of the Naval Academy, all fundamentals of the naval profession have been stressed, except the most important - handling men. The method of learning to lead has been by first learning to follow, which in the final analysis is the only real way of learning; but the same is equally true of all things, and it does not lessen the value of preliminary theory. A solid groundwork of theory, as the precursor of experience, enables one to meet experience, not with doubt and hesitation, but as an old friend. The Academy lays the foundation; experience builds the structure." xvi + 123 pages with index. Book is in GOOD to VERY GOOD condition. No dust jacket.

Lawrence of Arabia. A Biographical Enquiry

Publisher: Chicago, Henry Regnery, 1955.
448 p., illus. When this biography of T.E. Lawrence appeared it caused a furor by raising a number of questions about Lawrence, including the first open discussion of his illegitimacy. Bobrick, Benson, 1947- . [Thomas, George Henry, 1816-1870]
Master of War. The Life of General George H. Thomas
 Picture
Publisher: NY, Simon & Schuster, ©2009.
416 p., [16] p. of plates, illus., plans; 25 cm. "Argues here that George H. Thomas was the greatest and most successful general of the Civil War. Because Thomas didn't live to write his memoirs, his reputation has been largely shaped by others, most notably Grant and Sherman, who, Bobrick says, diminished Thomas' successes in their favor in their own memoirs." A good biography. It points out that Sherman marching to the sea instead of destroying Hood was not a wise military decision. For an understanding of why Thomas was so effective, Thomas Buell's 'The Warrior Generals' (1997) is much better. Bobrick would have better spent pages quoting Thomas's admirers to showing how in many ways Thomas organized for war. ISBN (10): 0743290259. Stock#47178. Vg, nearly new/ dj vg.

The Golden Warrior: The Life and Legend of Lawrence of Arabia.

Publisher: NY, Paragon House [1993].
xiii, 406 p., index, photos, map. This controversial and provocative biography overturns the mythology that surrounds this enigmatic man. Using previously unavailable sources as well as published material, Lawrence James reconstructs T. E. Lawrence's wartime career, examining how it was translated into legend during the 1920s and 30s. ...No other book so brilliantly describes British manipulations of the region... explains why Lawrence still captures our imagination as a man who controlled his own destiny, and as one of the world's last heroes."
