16pp. A very interesting "essay" from T Maynard Upfield of the Michael Faraday LCC School, Walworth SE London : a useful guide for educational historians. Sub-headings are Education as Environment, Corporal Punishment a Factor of Environment, The Teacher as best Judge, In Other Countries, Tradition in Discipline, Teachers must be Efficient, The Scholar and the Class, Co-Education of the Classes, Discipline and the Parent, School "At Homes", and Lectures to Parents. From "In Other Countries" the following paragraph was found very enlightening :- "In America we find that each State controls its own education, and therefore has its own regulations. Generally speaking, there seems to be little corporal punishment, and in some States it is forbidden. This is so in New York, where no corporal punishment is allowed in any school. Under certain conditions there exists expulsion, and the truant school for incorrigible children." As a 58 year-old Brit I find these comments surprising for in England corporal punishment was quite openly approved and even encouraged until the late 1950's. Bound in dark olive green card covers with black lettering and decoration to front cover. Very good cond trade paperback - minor creasing to lower front cover - all pages bright and clean. 8 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches
