Dr. John Ralston Sudler Account Book, Births Sussex County, Delaware 1835-1849
  Picture
Publisher: NP, 1965
Book. Book condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Soft cover Subtitle: Sussex County, Delaware, Births 1835-1849, From Accounts of Dr. John Ralston Sudler (1797-1871), With a Brief Biography of Dr. Sudler by Timothy Field Beard. Oversized oblong softcover. "Dr. John Ralston Sudler of Bridgeville, Sussex Co., Del., was undoubtedly typical of a country doctor in the United States in the 19th Century. Long hours, , which included trips on horseback or in a buggy at night and in all kinds of weather over rough dirt roads, which were paid in wood, pork, corn or labor, rather than hard cash, were the doctor's lot and a normal part of his life. The doctor had to be hardy in order to survive his patients. The old day books and ledgers which have survived give some picture of his busy professional life from the 1830's to the 1860's. In going through these well-preserved old volumes, which were written for the most part in a good firm hand, a great deal of Sussex County genealogy can be gleaned. Most important, probably, are the records of births, as there are no official Delaware birth records before 1858, and for some years after that time the records are sparse. The entries in these old account books record the date of the birth, the name of the father and the charge. If the doctor was late and had only to deliver the placenta, or after birth, he charged three dollars; for process obstetrics his fee was five dollars, although twins or difficult labor could raise the price to eight dollars. After the Civil War inflation set in and his charges doubled." 11 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Paper wrappers.
