Callcott, Mary Stevenson
Russian Justice
Publisher: The Macmillan Company, 1935 New York Book. Book condition: Good. Poor. Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall "..Dr. Callcott has visited prisons in our own country as well as in several others, and has sat through criminal trials in many places; therefore in her visits to courts and prisons in the U.S.S.R. she had a background of experience which made her observation intelligent. She says in her Preface: 'There is no doubt that we may learn something from the Russians about the restoration to society of those who contravene the law. Whether one sympathizes with or condemns the political faith of this country, one must admire and respect a people who are able to put ideals into works as they do. They know what they want of the man who is their criminal and they set to work to teach him how to fit into their society.' In this book she answers questions which must arise in the mind of every intelligent person: What are the Russian courts really like? What kinds of crime are committed? Who commits them? and What is the punishment given? In preparing the material Dr. Callcott had the aid of high Russian authorities, and the manuscript was checked on its completion by a member of the Commissariat of Justice in Moscow who found it of such interest that he has asked permission for its publication in Russia.." xi + 265 pages with index. Book is in GOOD condition. Dust jacket is in Poor condition; complete but split along front fold at spine.
