Kellogg, Rev. Elijah
HARDSCRABBLE of ELM ISLAND (ELM ISLAND STORIES)
Publisher: Lee & Shepard, 1871 Boston: 1871 Hardcover, 12mo, green cloth stamped in gilt. 220 pp, illustrated with B&W etchings. A "boy's story" of enterprise. Three young men set out to build a ship. They must make their own smithing tools, weave cloth for the sails, spend a winter trapping for furs to pay for the venture. Typically sweet nineteenth-century novel. The book is Good only, with cover and edgewear; some wear-through at tips and spine ends. A wrinkled spot on back board. Some pencil sketches and penmanship on blank endpape rs. Name in ink on front pastedown (which lists other series and titles), and recto of frontis. Some age spots and foxing, mostly in margins. Clearly a book that was read and enjoyed, not one that sat on the shelf ignored. It has lots of "character. " Hard Cover Good 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall
