2.   Litchman, Charles H.
Official History of the Improved Order Of Red Men. Compiled Under Authority
Publisher: Boston, Fraternity Publishing Company, G.S.D.= 1893
623 p., illus.; 24 cm. The Order was dedicated to "friendship, brotherly helpfulness, fraternal love, and good fellowship" and was for whites only. Its charter purpose was that the "memory of primitive red men will be preserved to the latest period of recorded time". This is one of the fraternities which had their origins in colonial patriotic societies (the best known example being the Tammany Society in New York), and, in fact, in medieval Europe. This Order, first organized in Baltimore in 1813, served as insurance for dues-paying members, who received illness and death benefits. It is a stage in the development of social structures to support the growth of urban America. The organization covered the whole country; its annual reports reflect larger problems of the country such as the Civil War. Bound in the original gilt stamped boards, with a sturdy replacement leather spine. Stock#OB129.
