Nice vivid images. Not dated, c. 1885-1895 at a guess. Nicely age-toned (light), bottom edge of cover fold a little bit chipped, otherwise a clean and interesting piece. Bailey's Manf'g advertised from No. 32 Dey Street, corner New Church, in New York. British Ropes logo in red and blue on every page; blue strand ropes illuminated with blue. An excellent handbook that not only illustrates types of wire rope and its applications to industries such as logging and forestry, oil-well drilling, marine and industrial application, suspension bridges and the like, it also contains a short history of the firm in British Columbia's industrial history. Nicely illustrated throughout with photos of industrial applications as well as cross-sections and lenths of wire rope. (Interesting note: according to the text, crude wire rope was discovered in the ruins of Pompeii!) Covers have moderate edgewear, corners a bit softened. Cover colors and gilt are bright and appealing. Previous owner's names on front paste-down, one in ink and one in pencil. Laid in are: a single-fold small sheet, one page, for New Improved Prismatic Rifle Scopes; single-fold large sheet, one page, list of salesman samples and used glasses (with additional pictorial ads); small single sheet, one page ad for DuMaurier Field Glass (illustrated); large single-fold sheet, 2 pages with illustrated ads for The Trooper sunglasses, 15-Power telescope, Puma Hunting Knives, and other optical devices (including a 39-cent "Genuine U.S. Army Trench Periscope). Advertises men's, women's, and childrens' fashions, farm implements and tools, kitchenware and cupboards, a farm wagon, folding knife and other cutlery, mission-style library furnitue, sewing machine, rugs, and many other items at special prices. Oh boy, if we could only mail order and get those prices now! The new building is pictured on the back cover. This was the era when Wards and Sears were competing for mail-order dominance. In very good and clean condition with one short closed tear at bottom edge of front cover, otherwise clean and unmarked throughout. This is an amazing compendium of the working tools and living necessities of the Pacific Northwest when it was still a fairly raw, wild, and woody place. Huge variety of tools for logging (lumbering), carpentry, etc. Sections on wood ranges and stoves, poultry rearing, pocket knives, dog sleds and harness, axes, wedges, saws, fishing tackle, welding tools and supplies. kitchenware (especially industrial), blasting supplies, mowers, machining tools..you get the idea. A few odd items such as toy wagons, velocipede, and golf supplies. Nothing girlie in here! CONDITION: A remarkably clean, tight copy with minor wear at corner tips, bottom corners worn through at tips. Pages have mellowed with age as expected. A small cluster of pages at the rear of the volume are creased/dogged, easily ironed flat with a little time and patience. A respectable collector copy and a superb reference.
