A solid popular history of the place before and after the gold rush, and part of a planned series on American Forts. Very light shelf wear and fading to the spine ends. The jacket is complete but for a little loss of material at the top rear spine fold. The spine is sun faded, the rear panel is lightly soiled, the edges modestly worn. First Edition ISBN: 0870621149 Small quarto, about 9.75 inches tall, in bright red cloth. 401 pages illustrated by document facsimiles, photographs. Kurutz, 422 (reporting 1644 copies printed). A very well written and detailed memoir of crossing the plains and mountains, and mining near Placerville and Mokelumne from Sept. 1850 to June, 1852. Mattes, 894 ("Diary exceptional . for thoroughness . penetrating observations of human character . ."). Mintz, 321. All three bibliographies are very complimentary of the grandson's accomplishment in retracing the route. The book is clean, bright and sound with just a hint of extremity wear. First edition Quarter turquoise cloth, gilt stamped peach cloth covered boards. Limited edition, #103 of 200 copies. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON THE LIMITATION PAGE. ADDITIONALLY SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AND HIS WIFE ON THE RECTO OF THE FRONTIS, WITH A PERSONAL INSCRIPTION. Truly a Forty-niner, he made the trek to California from Watertown, Wisconsin in the summer and fall of 1849. The major part of this book is his journal of that trip. He later settled in Denver, virtually at its founding, in 1859. A glassine jacket with a spider web design. Illustrated by a few photos and a frontis portrait. A virtually unworn copy with a minor bump on lower front edge. The glassine has some light wear and a couple of small chips, and the spine is slightly darkened.
