7.   Northrop, Henry Davenport
American Star Speaker Educator and Entertainer: A Standard Work onComposition and Oratory

Publisher: 1901
Unknown Hardcover Contains rules for expressing written thought in a correct and elegant manner; Model selections from the most famous authors; subjects for compositions and how to treat them; use of illustrations; descriptive, pathetic and humorous writings, etc., etc. Together with a peerless collection of reading and recitations, including programmes for special occasions from authors of world-wide renown, for public schools, academies, colleges, lodges, Sunday School, and social entertainments.

The illustrations themselves are worth the price of the book. Many appear to be taken from performances, with quotations underneath, and the pictures illustrating the gestures to go with the quotes. There are pictures of authors, recitations meant to include music, for which the notes are provided. Most illustrations are black and white, but some are in color.

Though intended to be a resource for the entertainments so popular before TV and movies arrived on the scene, this could be a wonderful language arts text in a home school today. It has instructions for how to write a composition, instruction in the use of the language, examples of great compositions, a wonderful list of subjects for compositions, including historical and biographical subjects, instruction in writing letters, a list of synonyms and antonyms, and instruction in how to read with expression and recite. There is also an illustrated section on the use of gestures that add interest to a recitation.

This book might be said to be an historical anthology of the popular literature for families in the period before the 20th century.

I would consider this a binding copy because the cover is very worn and the hinges are cracked, but the text block is intact. It's been well used and loved. There are some water stains in the margins of the last few pages, and some pages have what appear to be fingerprints or other types of smears, mostly in the margins. It does not affect readability. The presentation page reads for Birthday Thompson by Cordia Thompson, Dec. 25, 1906. This book needs an adoptive home that does not mind giving it a new cover.
