Good+ gray cloth hardcover in good+ white and dark blue decorated dustjacket; small edgetears to jacket, darkening of jacket at spine and edges and flaps. Binding is sound and secure, pages clean and unmarked

'This book is the first to cover adequately the important subject of sorting with its applications to commercial problems, compiler and assembler design, scientific problems, operating systems and list processing... Detailed attention is given to all popular sorting techniques, including those confined to internal memory, those using magnetic tapes, and those with disk or drum auxiliary memories... Although a language like LISP or IPL-V might suffice for understanding extensive list manipulation, the complication of learning the language might deter the reader. To avoid this difficulty, an easily understood notation, especially expressive of sort operations, is developed in chapter one. The next chapter provides a bridge between this notation and two assembly languages, FLAP (very miuch like FAP) and 360, and this is the basis for later quantitative contrast of different sort techniques...' (from the jacket flap) Contents includes Sections with multiple chapters in each -- Lists, Theoretical Considerations; Operator Implementation; Using Selection Sort; Sorting by Search; Sorting Using Sublists; Address Calculation; Merge Sorting; Replacement Sorting; Tape Sort Operation; Polyphase Sort; Merge Sort Analysis (Tape); Disk and Drum Sorts; Programs for the IBM 360 -- Internal Sort Timing and Contrast, Polyphase Sort Theorem Proofs; Polyphase Sort miscellaneous items

Provides a detailed description and discussion of the special-purpose computer for the information retrieval field developed at the Laboratory for Electromodelling of the Academy of Science, U.S.S.R. Developed by a leading Soviet computer designer in mechanized information retrieval, the design criteria presented are based on the Soviet Union's policy of centralization and therefore are of particular interest to Western research workers at a time when major decisions are being reached with regard to appropriate balances between centralized and decentralized information retrieval activities (from the jacket flap) The special-purpose computer hardware described is expressed in terms that computer specialists can understand from a review of what is technologically feasible...

1960 was a very productive year in the application and technical development of digital computers. During the year a number of transistorized computers were delivered, the common programming languages COBOL and ALGOL for stating business and scientific problems were published, and increased research was channeled into computer-oriented applications such as language translation, information retrieval, data-processing language strucutre, andso-called 'artificial intellgience' (From the Preface)

The early 1960's will witness industry-wide implementation of COBOL and ALGOL, the initial use of the multi-million doolar computing systems such as LARC and STRETCH, the proliferation of small 'satellite' computers, and a host of new developments in data communication, parallel processing, ultra-high speed and high-capacity memory units...
