Early in his career, Hawkins played shows broadcast from WFIL, Philadelphia, until World War II interrupted. In January of 1946, Hawkshaw was discharged from the military service. It appears that upon going home to resume his music career, he went first to the steel regions of Pennsylvania and hooked up with radio station WKST in New Castle. The Hawk headlined at the WWVA Jamboree (1946-1954), joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1955, etc. His music shows the influence of Hank Williams as well as blues, boogie, and honky tonk. Hawkins (1921-1963) was killed in the same plane crash that took the lives of Cowboy Copas and Patsy Cline.
