Detailed Information for Seller's item number: OB202
The Novels of Henry James. A Study. With a Bibliography by Frederick A. King
Author: Cary, Elisabeth Luther, 1867-1936. [James, Henry, 1843-1916]
Publisher: Putnam's Sons / Knickerbocker Press, 1905

215, [4] p. The portrait frontispiece, "From a photograph by Alice Boughton," shows James (1843-1916) in 1905. The last four pages advertise new titles by the publisher. "It has become increasingly true of [Mr. James] that he reaches depths and crannies of character and temperament to which none of his predecessors could have penetrated... by means of a passion for truth too intense and moving to be classified as philosophy. ...In the domain of his art it is his religion to reveal not perhaps so much as may be possible of life, but life as close as possible to its source... the tendency of his effort... is nothing, surely, but this, or at all events nothing less than this: to come by incorrigible patience and unwearying perception at the life of the soul, and to render this with an art worthy of the difficult, the well-nigh impossible subject." This delicately perceptive work is the first critical study of James, preceding Hueffer by eight years. Frederick Allen King's chronological bibliography includes essays, fiction, and biographies published from 1865 through August 1905. Bound in brown paper boards, red cloth spine; a little wear to edges & corners; near fine. stock#OB202.
