This is one of the fraternities which had their origins in the colonial patriotic societies (the best known example being the Tammany Society in New York), and, in fact in Medieval Europe. This Order was first organized in Baltimore in 1813. It served as insurance for dues paying members who got illness and death benefits. It is a stage in the development of social structures to support the growth of urban America. The organization covered the whole country and the annual reports reflect the larger problems of the country such as the Civil War.
