   A History of Classical Scholarship.
Author: Sandys, John Edwin, Sir, 1844-1922.
Publisher: Cambridge University Press, 1908-1921; reprint Martino & Krown Spellman Rare Books, 2004

Oversize 4to, three volumes, xxiv, 703; xxvii, 498; xii, 523 p. v. 1. From the sixth century B.C. to the end of the Middle Ages.--v. 2. From the revival of learning to the end of the eighteenth century (in Italy, France, England, and the Netherlands)--v. 3. The eighteenth century in and the nineteenth century in Europe and the United States of America. "Sandys remains the standard comprehensive history of classical scholarship. His magisterial work covers the whole field from the sixth century B.C. to the end of the nineteenth century. Sandys covers virtually every aspect: Scribes, editors, textual and literary critics, grammarians, historians, archaeologists, and antiquarians. "History" is of value not only to classicists, but also to anyone interested in European intellectual history and the history of manuscripts, books and printing. The first volume, which covers antiquity and the Middle Ages, was twice revised by the author. The other volumes remain as they originally appeared in 1908. Each includes a detailed table of contents and an extensive index. Sandys's treatment of scholarship through the Alexandrian era has been largely superseded by Pfeiffer. The rest of the work, although showing its age, is still without rival." Jenkins, Classical Studies: A Guide to the Reference Literature, p. 120. Binder's cloth; new from the publisher. (1990x).
