The book is set in Texas in the middle of the nineteenth centuryand is a romance of the Southern United States. The old San Antonio-Nacogdoches road was perhaps the oldest traveled road in America. Going east it passed through Louisiana and then to San Augustine, Florida. Going south it reached the City of Mexico.
