In the Spirit of Crazy Horse [Signed]
Author: Matthiessen, Peter Publisher: New York The Viking Press 1991
First edition of the post-litigation reissue An about Fine copy of the first edition, first printing of the post-litigation reissue (spine ends gently pushed) in a Fine dust jacket (tiny rub at one corner), SIGNED BY PETER MATTHIESSEN on the title page. AIM's first National Director, Russell Means, participated in a series of takeovers by the group of Alcatraz Island, Mount Rushmore, the Mayflower II (a replica ship), the Bureau of Indian Affairs headquarters in Washington, DC, and, most famously, AIM's 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee (the focus of this book) which resulted in an armed conflict with the FBI and local law enforcement personnel. Shortly after the book's publication in 1983, Matthiessen and The Viking Press were sued for libel by the then-former Governor of South Dakota, the FBI, and FBI agent David Price. The Governor (William J. Janklow) obtained a court order requiring that all copies of the book be removed from bookstores. Ultimately, after lengthy litigation, the courts ruled in favor of Peter Matthiessen and the Publisher, upholding Matthiessen's right to publish the book even if the account gave a one-sided view of the events at Wounded Knee. As a result of such ruling, the book was reissued with an epilogue by Peter Matthiessen and an afterword by Martin Garbus, neither of which appeared in the 1983 issue. (Martin Garbus is the legendary attorney who represented Viking Press an Peter Matthiessen in the litigation.) A Fine copy, in a Fine dust jacket, SIGNED BY PETER MATTHIESSEN. Hardcover Book condition: Fine. Jacket condition: fine
