The First State: An Illustrated History of Delaware
Author: Williams, William Henry, Illustrated by: Stallings, Carolyn
Publisher: Windsor Publications, Inc., 1985 Northridge, CA

ISBN: 0897811585 Book. Book condition: Very Good. Good. Hardcover 4to - over 9 - 12" tall "Small wonder that such a long and complex history could unravel with so much clarity! In The Firsts State: An Illustrated History of Delaware, William Henry Williams reveals a past which defies patterns, predictions, and sociological labels - a heritage which embraces progress and occasionally, hypocrisy. Delaware's nickname, the First State, rings patriotism as loudly as the Liberty Bell. A leader among the colonies, Delaware drafted its constitution and established a permanent capital before the national government did. When it came time to approve the U.S. Constitution, pioneering Delaware preceded its sister states. The nineteenth century was not as kind to this progressive image, however. While Methodists and Quakers advanced early abolitionist efforts - liberal laws first went into effect in 1787 - legislators refused to allow their state to be a 'trial balloon' for President Lincoln's 1861 emancipation plan. The chief executive's larger aims came to fruition only after the bloody Civil War. Although Delaware sometimes vacated its leadership role, it always remained unique. Robber barons throughout the nation fled the cities, leaving industrial problems to the victims. Yet, in Wilmington, millionaires and upper middle-class citizens alike never strayed far from the urban nucleus. Closeness, concern, and cash combined in a strong reform movement. The First State accompanies the reader from the rolling hills of northern New Castle to the flatlands of Kent and Sussex, examining the state's parts - and the whole. Thorough in every way, Dr. Williams also employs a memorable, highly readable style of writing. Each chapter opens with an episode characteristic of the historic era, and the book contains a custom-designed map and charts. Carolyn Stallings' charming illustrations serve as a further guide to the past. Finally, the 'Partners in Progress' section, written by Ann Frazier-Hedberg, credits the business organizations which have supported this book." Very well illustrated. 223 pages with index. Book is in VERY GOOD condition; gift inscription on front endpaper. Dust jacket is in GOOD condition; edgewear.
