Marguerite de Angeli
American award-winning author and illustrator of children’s books. Marguerite Lofft de Angeli (1889 - 1987) is one of the best known and most highly respected author / illustrators of children's books. Her first career was that of professional concert contralto which she abandoned in 1920 when she married John Dailey de Angeli. It was not until she was 32 years old that she received art training when she studied with Maurice Bower. The following year she began doing illustrations for The Country Gentleman, Ladies’ Home Journal, The American Girl, and other magazines, as well as illustrating books for authors such as Elsie Singmaster, Cornelia Meigs and Dorothy Canfield. In 1936 she began writing her own books, finally writing and illustrating 30 books, and illustrating more than a dozen books for other writers. Angeli was admired particularly for her pioneering stories about minorities and for her historical fiction about the Middle Ages. de Angeli also wrote an album of poems and her autobiography, Butter at the Old Price. Her literary/artistic awards included a Caldecott Honor Book award twice, a Newbery Medal, a Newbery Honor Book award, a Lewis Carroll Shelf award, and the 1968 Regina Medal.
