Gene Autry
American singer and actor known as The Singing Cowboy on radio, in movies and on television. Autry (1907 – 1998) had become the top Western star at the box-office by 1937 and reached the peak of his popularity in the 1940s. He also had weekly radio show from 1940 to 1956, and by 1950 was producing his own TV show. By his retirement in 1964, he had made almost a hundred films and over 600 records. He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1969, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970, and the Western Performers Hall of Fame in 1972. With Mickey Herskowitz, he co-authored an autobiography published in 1976.
