Carl Klaus
Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Iowa; writer of literary nonfiction. Carl H. Klaus began his academic career at the University of Iowa in 1963. He taught mainly the art of writing literary or creative nonfiction, which includes such forms as journal and diary writing, and the personal essay. He was the founding director of the University of Iowa’s Nonfiction Writing Program and the NEH/Iowa Institute on Writing. He has also contributed to the creative nonfiction genre in such books as Weathering Winter: A Gardener's Daybook (1997), My Vegetable Love: A Journal of a Growing Season (1996), Taking Retirement: A Beginner's Diary (1999) and Letters to Kate: Life after Life (2006). His current work in progress is The Chameleon "I": Versions and Evocations of Self in Personal Essays. Klaus is also the author, co-author or editor of several books on drama, textbooks on writing, and books about the teaching of writing. Currently, he is co-editor of Sightline Books, the Iowa Series in Creative Nonfiction.
