Lisa Kernan
Film scholar and Arts Librarian for Film, TV and Theater, and Lecturer at UCLA. Lisa Devereux Kernan (1952 – 2005) was born in Watertown, New York. Her father, Michael Kernan, was a feature writer for The Washington Post and a novelist, and her mother, Margot Starr Kernan, a video artist and retired professor of film studies. She grew up in Northern California and Washington, D.C. After receiving a B.A. in Humanities from New College in Sarasota, Florida in 1974, she earned an M. S. in Library Science (with honors) from Columbia University in New York. Kernan worked for the photography department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York while studying at Columbia. She moved to San Francisco in 1983 where she worked as the film librarian for Lucasfilm, Ltd. from 1983 until 1985, and then as a teaching assistant during 1990-91 while earning her M.A. in Film Studies from San Francisco State University in 1991. Kernan accepted a fellowship in 1991 at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Film & Television Archive, and then remained as a teaching fellow at UCLA through 1996. From 1996 to 1998, she was the Chief Librarian and Archivist for Warner Bros. Feature Animation Studio. She returned to UCLA in 1998 as Arts Librarian for Film, Television and Theater, and a lecturer, the positions she held at the time of her death, but also earned a Ph.D. in film and television critical studies from UCLA in 2000. An expert on movie trailers, Kernan published her dissertation, Reading Movie Trailers: Hollywood Dreams its Audience, as a commercial book in 2004. She was also the author of numerous articles on film and media.
