Sample Autograph Signature: Dannie Abse

Welsh physician, poet, novelist and playwright. Daniel Abse was born in Cardiff, Wales in 1923 to Jewish parents. He was educated at the University of Wales, and received his medical training at King's College, London, and Westminster Hospital where he qualified as a doctor in 1950. After serving in the Royal Air Force from 1951 to 1954, he practiced as a specialist at the Central Medical Establishment chest clinic between 1954 and 1989 before retiring from clinical practice. Abse's dual career began while he was in medical school with the publication of his first collection of poetry, After Every Green Thing, in 1948. It was followed by nine other volumes of poetry, three novels, several plays, and three autobiographical works. He also edited numerous poetry anthologies, and co-edited two books with his late wife, art historian Joan Mercer, Voices in the Gallery: Poems and Pictures (1986) and The Music Lover's Literary Companion (1988). His most recent novel is The Strange Case of Dr Simmonds & Dr Glas (2002), and his latest poetry collection is Running Late (2006). Abse won the 1960 Charles Henry Foyle Trust Award for his play, House of Cowards; both the the Welsh Arts Council Award and the Jewish Chronicle Book Award for his Selected Poems in 1970; the 1979 Arts Council of Wales Literature Award for Pythagoras; the Cholmondeley Award in 1985; and the 2004 Jewish Quarterly-Wingate Literary Prize for Fiction for New and Collected Poems. He was also Senior Fellow of the Humanities and writer-in-residence at Princeton University for 1973-74, and President of the Poetry Society from 1978 until 1992. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1983, Fellow of the Welsh Academy of Letters in 1992, Honorary Fellow at the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1999, and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Universities of Wales (1989) and Glamorgan (1997).
