Junior Johnson
American race car driver and one of the most successful NASCAR drivers in history. Robert Glen Johnson, Jr. was born on a farm in Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1931. He developed his driving skills running moonshine as a young man. As a rookie in 1955, he won five races and finished sixth in the 1955 NASCAR Grand National. His career was interrupted for 11 months the following year by a visit to prison after his father's moonshine still was discovered by federal agents. Returning to
NASCAR, he became one of the most capable short-track racers in the business, earning 50 wins as a driver, 11 of which were at major speedway races, before he retired in 1966 to become a team owner. Johnson had equal success with his team drivers who won 139 races and six Winston Cup Championships. His awards include being inducted into both the International Motorsports Hall of Fame (1990) and Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (1991), and named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers (1998). Johnson's early life inspired the 1973 film The Last American Hero starring Jeff Bridges, and served as technical advisor for the film.
