Penelope Hobhouse
British garden writer, designer, historian, lecturer and gardener. Penelope Hobhouse, perhaps the world’s best known garden expert, was born in Northern Ireland in 1929. She received an Honours Degree in Economics from Cambridge University in 1951. She did not begin gardening until her three children were teenagers, and shortly thereafter published he first book, The Country Gardener in 1976. From 1979 until 1993, she and her husband, Professor John Malins, were in charge of the restoration of the National Trust Gardens at Tintinhull House in Somerset, England. Hobhouse has written over 20 books, and is also an Associate Editor of the magazine Gardens Illustrated. She has designed gardens throughout Europe and the United States including a garden for Queen Elizabeth at Walmer Castle. Among her awards are the Royal Horticultural Society Victoria Medal of Honour, the highest award given by the RHS to British Horticulturists; an Award of Excellence from the Garden Writers Association of America; and the Life Time Achievement Award from the Guild of Garden Writers.
