Robert A. Hipkiss
Professor Emeritus of English, University of California; literary critic and author. Robert Arthur Hipkiss obtained his B.A. at San Jose State University before earning a Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1966. He taught at the University of California at Long Beach from 1966 until 1997 when he became a Professor Emeritus. His first book, Jack Kerouac, Prophet of the New Romanticism: A Critical Study of the Published Works of Kerouac and a Comparison of Them to Those of J.D. Salinger, James Purdy, John Knowles, and Ken Kesey was published in 1976. This often quoted study was followed in 1984 by
The American Absurd: Pynchon, Vonnegut, and Barth which is equally well regarded. In addition, Hipkiss also wrote Semantics: Defining the Discipline published in 1995.
