Sample Autograph Signature: Len Deighton

British historian and author of spy fiction and historical novels. Leonard Cyril Deighton won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in 1952 after attending St Martin's School of Art in London. He graduated in 1955 and became an airline steward before working as an illustrator in New York City. Prior to his writing career, he served as an art director in a London advertising agency. The Ipcress File, his first novel was published in 1962 and was the first in series of spy novels, several of which have been adapted as films. He also wrote the screenplay for the 1969 film Oh! What a Lovely War. The first trilogy of his Bernard Samson spy novel series was made into a TV series in 1988. For many of his non-spy novels, Deighton drew on his knowledge of World War II military history. Bomber, his 1970 historical novel in this genre, is considered his masterpiece. Deighton's first historical work first appeared as two articles in The Sunday Times Magazine in 1967. Ten years later he published the first of four books on particular aspects of World War II, and then in 1993 issued a general examination in Blood, Tears and Folly: An Objective Look at World War II. Drawing upon the skills used in his first career, he has illustrated a number of his own military history books. Deighton has also written two cookbooks after first publishing his culinary work in a weekly series of "cookstrips" in The Observer from 1962 to 1966.
