Dale Hawkins
Pioneer American rock singer, songwriter, and rhythm guitarist. Delmar Allen Hawkins, often called the architect of the swamp rock boogie, was born in 1938 in Goldmine, Louisiana. By 1957 he had developed a unique blend of the heavy blues sound of Afro-American Louisiana artists, country music, gospel and the new rock and roll style of Elvis Presley. His classic Susie Q. was release in 1957 and was a hit on both the R&B and pop charts. It was chosen as one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Hawkins has had a long and successful career, appearing on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" and performing at such famed venues as New York's Apollo Theater. He toured as a guitarist with such sophisticated artists as pianist Ramsey Lewis, Jr. and vocalist Dinah Washington. During his career, he has had only one other top forty song, La-Do-Dada in 1958. In the 1960's Hawkins became active as a record producer, but has continued to record and perform. In 1999, just in time for his first appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Dale released his first album of new material in 30 years. He is a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Hall of Fame, and a recipient of Britain's Now Dig This readers 2000 NDT Awards.
