Sample Autograph Signature: Mickey Hart

Drummer for Grateful Dead, percussionist, solo artist, ethnomusicologist and author. Michael "Mickey" Hart was born September 11, 1943 in Brooklyn, NY. He joined the Grateful Dead in September 1967 after selling drums and musical instruments with his father who owned and operated Hart Music in San Carlos, California. Embarrassed by the financial misdealings of his father, who had briefly managed the band, he left Grateful Dead in February 1971. He recorded the album Rolling Thunder in 1972, then returned to the Dead in 1975 where he remained with the group until their official split in 1995. Despite being a high school dropped-out, Hart has written four books documenting his lifelong study of the history and mythology of music: Drumming at the Edge of Magic: A Journey into the Spirit of Percussion , Planet Drum: A Celebration of Percussion and Rhythm , Spirit into Sound: The Magic of Music, and Songcatchers: In Search of the World’s Music. Hart has traveled extensively to record global musical traditions on the verge of extinction, and worked with archivists and ethnomusicologists at both the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, and the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage at the Smithsonian Institution. His solo recordings are often collaborative efforts with percussion masters the world over. During his travels, he has collected percussion instruments from around the world. Hart's album, Planet Drum, which hit #1 on the Billboard World Music Chart and remained there for 26 weeks, received the Grammy for Best World Music Album in 1991, the first Grammy ever awarded in this category. Hart serves the Board of Trustees of the American Folklife Center and on the Library of Congress National Recorded Sound Preservation Board.
