Peter Gzowski
Canadian broadcaster, journalist and author. Peter Gzowski (1934 - 2002) was a pillar of public broadcasting and journalism in Canada who was known as "Mr. Canada" to many. He worked at a number of newspapers before becoming the youngest-ever managing editor of Maclean's when he was 28. In 1971, he began a career in radio hosting the CBC's This Country in the Morning until 1974. From 1976 to 1978 he hosted the television show 90 Minutes Live on CBC Television, and then returned to CBS Radio in 1982 where he hosted his famous Morningside show until 1997. It is estimated that he conducted 27,000 interviews as host of Morningside, and some 30,000 over his entire career. Gzowski wrote several nonfiction books, notably The Sacrament and The Game of Our Lives. Excerpts from Morningside have been collected in numerous editions of The Morningside Papers. His columns for Canadian Living magazine have also been collected in Canadian Living and Friends, Moments, Countryside. Gzowski received many honors including 11 honorary degrees, a Governor General's Award for the Performing Arts, and appointment as Chancellor of Trent University in 1999. He also founded the Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf tournament which raises funds for literacy projects across Canada.
