Sample Autograph Signature: Stephen Jay Gould

American paleontologist, evolutionary biologist, and historian of science. Stephen Jay Gould (1941 2002) was best known for his popular and influential treatises on evolution. Graduating with a degree in geology in 1963 from Antioch College, he briefly studied at the University of Leeds, and then completed his graduate work at Columbia University in 1967. Gould was hired immediately by Harvard University where he remained until his death. Harvard promoted him to Professor of Geology and Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology at the institution's Museum of Comparative Zoology in 1973, and in 1982 was awarded the title of Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology. Gould published many popular science essays in Natural History magazine which were reprinted in ten collected volumes including Ever Since Darwin and The Panda's Thumb. He also wrote seven popular treatises, published two additional collections of his essays, one of which, Triumph and Tragedy in Mudville: A Lifelong Passion for Baseball, reflected his enthusiasm for baseball. In addition, Gould authored two technical treatises, Ontogeny and Phylogeny and The Structure of Evolutionary Theory. Throughout his life he spoke against pseudoscience in all its forms including racism, sexism, and creationism (and the related constructs Creation Science and Intelligent Design). Gould was the recipient of 44 honorary degrees and 66 major fellowships, medals, and awards in both the sciences and humanities.
