Sample Autograph Signature: Garet Garrett

American journalist, editor, author and Old Right libertarian. Garet Garrett (1878–1954) was one of the lions of the Old Right best known for his critiques of the New Deal and as one of the most outspoken and articulate voices for the “America First” movement that opposed U.S. involvement in World War 2. By 1903, Garrett had become a popular writer for the old New York Sun. Later, he worked as a financial writer for The New York Times, the Saturday Evening Post, and The Wall Street Journal. In 1916 he became the executive editor of the New York Tribune, but focussed on writing eight of his fourteen books between 1920 and 1932. He also wrote regular columns for several business and financial publications during this period. The election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt spurred him into returning to journalism as a political columnist for the Saturday Evening Post from which he issued salvos against the New Deal from 1933 until 1940 when he was made editorial-writer-in-chief of the Saturday Evening Post. Garrett's editorials during the 1939-1942 period were published in 2003 under the title Defend America First. A selection of his earlier columns appeared in 2002 as Salvos Against the New Deal. Garrett argued that the New Deal imported Eupopean socialistic ideas, and although they were brought by intellectuals, the wave of European immigrants during the late 19th and early 20th centuries were the political force Roosevelt was using to transform American political cultural. As early as the 1920s Garrett had begun arguing that immigration should be restricted because the vast number of immigrants concentrated in cities were becoming a dangerous political bloc.
