John Fricke
American TV producer, author, and preeminent Judy Garland and Wizard of Oz historian. Fricke has probably done more to preserve Judy Garland's legacy than any other single person. His efforts started in 1985 when he served as creative consultant for the 1985 award-winning PBS-TV special Judy Garland: The Concert Years. After publishing his first book, The Wizard of Oz: The Official 50th Anniversary Pictorial History in 1989, he served as associate producer for the 1990 CBS-TV documentary, The Wizard of Oz: The Making of A Movie Classic, and for the Emmy Award-nominated 1990 CBS-TV documentary The Wonderful World of Oz: Fifty Years of Magic. In 1993, Fricke co-wrote, co-directed and hosted the Telly Award-winning home video documentary, We're Off to See the Munchkins. In 1997, he co-produced & co-wrote the Emmy Award Winning documentary biography, Judy Garland: Beyond the Rainbow, which was based on his 1992 book Judy Garland: World's Greatest Entertainer. Fricke was the consultant to virtually all production departments for Life With Judy Garland/Me and My Shadows, the 2001 multiple Emmy Award-winning ABC-TV movie. Fricke received a 2004 Emmy Award as co-producer of the PBS-TV program, Judy Garland: By Myself. His most recent book, Judy Garland: A Portrait in Art and Anecdote, was published in 2003, and preceded by his 100 Years of Oz published in 1999. Fricke has discussed Garland, Oz, or both on literally hundreds of international radio and television programs. Over the years, Fricke has served The International Wizard of Oz Club, Inc., as President, Vice-president, a member of its board of directors, and as editor-in-chief of its magazine, The Baum Bugle. He is presently consultant to both The Judy Garland Heirs Trust and The Land of Oz Preservation Company.
