Timothy Findley
Canadian novelist and playwright. Timothy Irving Frederick Findley (1930 - 2002), who was self-educated after the 10th grade, pursued an acting career until 1962. He abandoned it in favor of writing despite significant achievements as an actor. His first two novels had limited success, but Findley's third novel, The Wars, won the Governor General's Award for fiction and was later adapted for film. Elizabeth Rex, his most successful play, won another Governor General's award. Best known as a novelist and playwright, he also wrote short ficiton, and drama and documentary for radio, television and film. His many awards included the Order of Ontario (1991), Officer of the Order of Canada (1986), Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Letters (1966), and several honorary doctorates.
