Charlie Duke
American astronaut, business executive, motivational and inspirational speaker, and author. Charles Moss Duke, Jr. is one of only twelve men who have walked on the moon. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1957 and entered the Air Force.
After completion of his training, he served three years as a fighter interceptor pilot in Germany. After earning a Master's degree in Aeronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1964, and graduating from the Aerospace Research Pilot School in 1965, Duke was one of 19 selected for NASA's fifth group of astronauts. Later, he served as Capsule Communicator for Apollo 11, the first landing on the Moon. In 1972, Duke served as lunar module pilot of Apollo 16 where he and John W. Young walk upon the surface of the Moon. He retired from NASA in 1975 to enter private business, was promoted to Brigadier General in 1979, and retired from the military in 1986. Currently, he is the president of Charlie Duke Enterprises and owner of Duke Investments. Among his many awards and honors, he has received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal with Oak leaf cluster, and the Legion of Merit. He and his wife, Dotty, are the authors of Moonwalker.
