Duffy Daugherty
Legendary Michigan State University football coach. Hugh "Duffy" Daugherty (1915 - 1987) was the head coach of the Michigan State University Spartans football team from 1954 to 1972. During this period, he coached MSU into a postion of national dominance in college football by compiling a record of 109-65-5. Daugherty also was a civil rights pioneer by recruiting top black athletes who could not be admitted to southern colleges and universities because of their race. Michigan State honor him by naming the practice facility for the football team the Duffy Daugherty Football Building. There is also a Duffy Daugherty Memorial Award presented annually to a person for lifetime achievement and outstanding contribution to amateur football. He was also elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1975. Daugherty was the author of Duffy Daugherty's Defense Spartan Style, co-author with Wilson Clifford B. II of 1st and Ten, and co-author with Dave Diles of Duffy: An Autobiography.
