Dino De Laurentiis
Prodigious Italian-American film producer. Agostino "Dino" De Laurentiis began his career in Italy producing neorealist art films in partnership with Federico Fellini, but turned his attention in the 1960s to the production of "spectaculars" after the partnership ended. A slump in the Italian movie industry brought him to Hollywood in the early 1970s where his 1974 re-make of King Kong, while financially sucessful, met with critical condemnation as farcical. De Laurentiis produced a number of successful and acclaimed films in the 1970s and into the 1980s, but between these successes he had a great many financial flops, and produced an abundance of schlock. By the end of 1980s, he was generally dismissed as a has-been producer of crass and vulgar films, but his fortunes rose again in 2001 with his Hannibal followed by Red Dragon, a remake of his 1986 Hannibal Lecter film Manhunter. Over his career to date, he has produced almost 60 films including art films, camp classics, spectacles, "blockbusters," and popular entertainments. Overall, he has produced, financed, presented, or distributed over 600 movies and is still going strong. He has received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and the Producers Guild of America David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures.
