Jim Davis
American cartoonist and creator of the popular comic strip Garfield. James Robert Davis, an Indiana boy who grew up on a small farm with 25 cats, created the Garfield comic strip in 1978 which appears in more than 2,500 newspapers worlwide. Recently, Guinness World Records‘, named Garfield "The Most Widely Syndicated Comic Strip in the World." Prior to Garfield, he created a comic strip, Gnorm Gnat, that ran for five years in an Indiana newspaper before Davis ended the strip by drawing a giant foot crushing Gnorm after he failed to get it nationally syndicated. He also created U.S. Acres, a strip featuring Orson the Pig which ran in some newspapers in the late 1980's, and Mr. Potato Head that ran from 2000 to 2003. Davis has received four "Outstanding Animated Program" Emmy Awards, the National Cartoonist Society Humor Strip Award for 1981 and 1985, their Reuben Award for 1989, the Elzie Segar Award for 1985, and been inducted into the Licensing Hall of Fame (1998).
